Isometric Exercises

Isometric exercises are a strenght training exercise wherein muscles are exercised in a static position at a particular angle

It is an ancient art practised in yoga and martial arts.Overcoming isometrics were exercise against immovable objects(eg. door frames).Yielding isometrics were exercises against resistance opposition(eg.free weights).

Comparisions:Isometric exercises increase maximum strenght at  joint angles.Dynamic exercises train through a full range of muscle movement.

NASA researched Isometric Exercises to see the benefits of preventing muscular atrophy. Though it promoted muscle growth it failed to prevent decrease in contractile protein found in muscular tissue.

Precautionary Measures: Avoid in high blood pressure patients.

Isometric Exercises caused a heavy increase in blood pressure when not followed within parameters or when excessive resistance was used(namely trembling of the body regions in use during the exercise).

Uses: Sports specific, rehabilitation

Sports such as judo, wrestling, climbing,horseback riding used maximal exercises to increase strenght.Rehabilitation is using submaximal exercises such as free weights to overcome resistance.Isometrics were not found suitable for power sports such as sprinting, jumping

Limitations as in all other spheres.

Isometric exercise do not increase maximal velocity but only strenghten muscle fibres at the angle and minimal surrounding areas at which the core muscle group is being trained

Requirements are basically nil.

Equipment needed is practically not existant as these exercises can be done anywhere with one's own body or immovable objects.

Exercises are for all muscle groups

Muscle groups include facial not otherwise possible in dynamic exercise carried out at gyms. 

Isometric exercises are beneficial to all age groups and can be carried out in various stages of basic, advanced and mantenance levels.

The author had started using these exercises at a very early age mainly because there was no equipment to purchase and all that was needed was found around the house. It also meant no gym expenses. The results were suprising and the exercise are still faithfully carried out till tioday for a better well being. The author has crossed 53 years.
