Very few people today would not agree that smoking is not only injurious to the health but it has become quite unsociable to do so. When we look back at advertisements for tobacco and associated products such words as Marlboro Man, smoke Capstan, the empire's favourite cigarette, Peter Stuyvesant, Ardath and Wild Woodbine come to mind. I had an uncle who used to smoke 60 cigarettes a day until he died of lung cancer. Can you just imagine doing that today, and who could afford it anyway! All tobacco contains harmful substances but cigarettes contain the greatest number of them so for the purposes of this article I will refer to cigarettes only.Cigarettes contain things that we would not dream of. If we were to ask what is in a cigarette that harms you, most people would reply "Nicotine". However, the nicotine is only one of literally hundreds of harmful substances contained in a cigarette. They range from tars which are carcinogenic (cancer causing), to saltpetre used to keep the tobacco burning and heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium and mercury.Well, how do I stop using the wretched things I hear you ask. Firstly you must really want to do it. If you are half hearted and tell yourself that it is probably a good idea but now is not the right time to start, and in any case you enjoy smoking and what else is there to do when you are bored etc etc, then you might as well not think about it as you are sabotaging your own efforts to quit.Let's look at some serious ways to start on the non-smoking journey which will lead down the road to improved health and much more money to spend on yourself for other things. Commence seeing yourself without a cigarette in your hand and having no desire to do so. This is called visualization and is a powerful tool to use to overcome an addictive habit, for that is exactly what nicotine causes. If you smoke say, 20 cigarettes each day, make a plan to smoke less. An excellent plan is to take a sharp single edge razor blade ( you can buy them from a hardware store) and carefully cut 10 cigarettes in half. Write down the number of hours you would be smoking in and allocate say, one half a cigarette each half hour. This will probably cover you for about 10 hours of smoking. By smoking only half a cigarette each half hour instead of the whole cigarette, you have immediately reduced your intake by 50 %! Not a bad start, is it!After two weeks, think of smoking the half cigarette every ¾ hour instead of half hourly. This will again reduce your daily intake. Try the Nicabate gum which you can obtain from a pharmacy. This provides the body with an alternative to cigarette smoking and will allow you to gradually break the habit. See a hypnotist. This may sound weird but it can be very helpful. Hypnotism can place a thought in your subconscious mind that actually tells you that you do not want to smoke, do not like it, feel sick when you do smoke and that you cannot stand the smell or taste of it any longer.Visit a chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment is said to enhance the body's immune response and assist in your quest to be nicotine free. By having chiropractic care, your body will experience both physical and mental well being. Both of these are ideal adjuncts to throwing off an addictive and harmful habit. |
