Acai berry is a purple, grape sized berry found in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. It is very nutritious containing omega fats (healthy fats) minerals and vitamins, is rich in fiber and is a very powerful antioxidant. It has recently surged in popularity after it was featured on Oprah's show and Rachel Ray's show, in additions to being a featured story on several news channels. Dr Perricone naming in it the number one super food in the world probably didn't hurt either. All in all acai berries are excellent addition to any diet. The next question of course is always: "Well, if it's so awesome how come I have never seen it in any super markets?" There are two reasons for this. First is that acai berry is 90% seeds and only 10% pulp, as such it's unlikely that you could buy a pound or two of it even in Brazil. The second reason is that acai uses a lot of it's antioxidant power in just a few hours after being picked off of a palm it grows on. To prevent that and to keep all of its benefits it needs to be freeze dried right away. Combining these two reasons makes it very unlikely that the berries themselves will ever be sold at super markets. Not to worry though, many companies realized the benefits of those little berries and now there are many products based on acai berry.
