There have been so many studies done on creatine dangers that you sometimes wonder what on earth the dangers could be! The fact is that none of the studies have revealed any significant side effects and the stories about kidney failure are greatly exaggerated. Creatine has had a bad press in many ways and this is unfair. Some stories got too much attention. There was a story of the three wrestlers who wanted to lose weight. They decided to wear rubber suits and ride bicycles in a sauna to do this. Pretty extreme! Their deaths got enormous coverage and their deaths were blamed on creatine but the fact is that two of the three were NOT taking creatine! Perhaps the real reason was dehydration which was caused by the extreme conditions inside the sauna.

In many cases, where medical lobbies have vested interests, it pays them to twist the truth or just simply ignore it and even invent or just exaggerate so- called creatine dangers which may be dubious to say the least. The story of kidney failure often gets touted but the studies all show that there is no evidence for this at all. For example one Dutch study put a group of men on a double-blind placebo trial for almost a year with a daily dose of 10 g of creatine to see if there were any effects on their kidney function. There were none!

However, there is a word of caution in the case of creation ethyl ester (CEE) which is a new derivative of creatine which increases absorption of creatine in the muscles and leads to spectacular results. There have been one or two studies which do indicate that the levels of creatinine which is a waste molecule and which is excreted from the kidneys, is increased by the use of CEE. This would seem to put too much stress on the kidneys but the jury is still out on this one but it would seem to indicate one of the possible creatine dangers.

Fortunately creatine research in other medical areas has shown that it is the most useful supplement ever and it is used in a wide range of medical practice and care. Creatine as well as building hard muscle is also a great supplement to help brain function and in fact, it is now recommended that people should take a daily dose if they want to avoid getting a stroke, that is, for those who might be considered at risk. This was the result of a study done at the Harvard Medical School. In accident cases, where there was a traumatic brain injury or damage, creatine was found to aid recovery.

We have seen then that apart from taking a few sensible precautions such as avoiding dehydration and not loading up unnecessarily and avoiding the use of CEE, there are no creatine dangers worth mentioning and that creatine is still the king of bodybuilding supplements.
