If you are like me, you probably are concerned about our deteriorating health due to our lifestyle. Think about what we make our bodies endure - chemical laden vegetables and meat, heavy pollution, nutrition less fast food, lack of exercise. All these factors combine to cause so many diseases. The good news is, fish oil can help strengthen our body and fight against diseases to keep us healthy. So, what does fish oil do? Let’s find out.

What does fish oil do? Fish oil provides us many health benefits, and these benefits are primarily due to the presence of Omega 3 fats in it. The two main ones are DHA (Docosahexanoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid). These two fats protect us against a variety of diseases, like cancer, thrombosis, heart attack, diabetes and AMD, among others.

Is it good for the brain? Absolutely. In fact, 60% of our brain is made up of fats. Out of which almost half is DHA Omega 3. Increasing the intake of DHA in our diet can help in improving our memory and focus. It also protects against the onset of Alzheimer’s with age.

Is it safe for pregnant mothers? Yes, in fact it is recommended that pregnant mothers take Omega 3 oil as it aids the brain development of the fetus. They should continue with the oil even after birth to replace the depleted levels of DHA in their body.

How about kids, can they take it too? Omega 3 oils are good for people of any age. There are no known side effects, and a whole lot of benefits to be derived. They can actually help prevent ADHD in kids and make their brain sharper and alert.

Eating fish would provide these oils to me, right? This is feasible, however you need to make sure you are eating a fish rich in DHA Omega 3. Mackeral and salmon are two examples. The best one however is one found in New Zealand, called the Hoki fish. It is especially rich In DHA, and highly recommended for its oil.

So what does fish oil do that eating fish does not? The problem is, you would have to eat large quantities of the fish on a daily basis just to get the adequate amount of oil. It would also be a bit expensive to do so on a regular basis. The better alternative is to take a good fish oil supplement that can provide the necessary oil with just a couple of gels a day, and is cost efficient too.

So, how do I find a good supplement? The first thing to look for is the source of the oil, namely the fish used for making the oil. A DHA rich fish is what we are looking for. Then, the oil should be thoroughly refined by Molecular Distillation to make it as free from impurities as possible. Finally, check that the DHA content in the gel is more than any other ingredient, including EPA.

DHA is the component of fish oil that provides the bulk of its health benefits. The body can also easily convert DHA into EPA if needed, but it can’t do the reverse i.e. convert EPA into DHA. So it makes sense to buy a DHA rich supplement as opposed to an EPA centric one.

Now that you are aware what does fish oil do, do a little research into this fantastic nutrient which can protect your and your family’s health against all odds.
