If you are like me, you probably are aware of the amazing health benefits that fish oil provides us. You may have already tried a few fish oil tablets, which did not provide the benefits that you had hoped for. They literally even left a bad taste in your mouth. This is a common problem as many people are not aware how to evaluate a fish oil tablet. Here’s a checklist to make this process easy for you.

Look at the source of the fish oil - which fish are they using? This is the most important point when it comes to the effectiveness of fish oil tablets. Not all fish oils are equal. The amount and type of Omega 3 fats they contain differs from species to species. You need to look for a fish that is naturally rich in DHA Omega 3. The Hoki fish from New Zealand is one such example.

Is it fresh? Some fish oils leave a rancid aftertaste in the mouth. This usually means that the oil used in the tablet was not fresh. This is why it is important that the source of the fish and the processing facility where the tablet is produced, are nearby. This ensures that the fish is still fresh when its oil is extracted and put into the tablets.

Does it have more DHA than EPA? This is important, because most of the benefits that fish oil provides us with are due to the DHA in it. Also, our body can easily convert DHA into EPA if needed. But it cannot convert EPA into DHA. We have to rely on an external source like fish oil tablets only, for our DHA.

Has the oil been properly refined? The best method to refine fish oil is Molecular Distillation. This is a complex process that removes almost all the impurities like lead and mercury from the oil. However, this process is expensive too, and many companies do not use it for this reason alone. They refine their oil by simpler and cheaper methods which are not as effective as molecular distillation.

How is the fish oil packaged? Is it a soft gel, or does it have an enteric coating around it? Usually, an enteric coating is preferred for supplements as it ensures the nutrients are released in the intestine and not in the stomach.

However, this is not required in fish oil tablets. Fish oil can be easily released into the stomach without any harm or loss of efficiency. In fact, some companies use an enteric coating to hide the fact that their oil is not fresh and they even mask its smell by using fragrances.

Now that you are aware of these facts, do some research into fish oil tablets and find out a pure and DHA rich fish oil.
