With Zone fish oil being one of the more prominent omega-3 products, you would expect it to be one of the best. However, although it is good, there are some important areas where it falls desperately short.

To make more of an informed choice we need to understand what makes high quality oil. The two most important omega 3 fatty acids are DHA and EPA, with recent research showing us that most of the benefits come from DHA. These include prevention of heart attacks and strokes, lowering of blood pressure and cholesterol and maintaining brain health and correct functioning.

Zone fish oil like the majority out there contains only a small amount of DHA and a much larger amount of EPA. This is partly because it is cheaper to produce, giving the company more profits at the end of the day.

For example, the one I personally take contains almost fifty percent more DHA than this one, and has a far higher purity level. Purity is vital when it comes to omega 3 and if you look at the Zone website you see an allergy alert on their best selling fish oil:

"This product contains fish ingredients (anchovies, sardines) and soybean oil. This product is processed in a facility which also processes soy, dairy, milk/whey, egg, wheat, and peanut/tree nut products or ingredients."

For a product costing over $50 for a month's supply this is unacceptable. To compare, the oil I use is processed in a tailor made environment only for fish oil, so no other contaminants can be present and retails for only $16.85 for a month's supply, making it the purest available.

In addition they expect you to take four pills a day, while I sometimes forget to take the two a day mine requires!

If you truly seek to get the most health benefits and protection from your daily supplement, there are far better and cheaper alternatives to Zone fish oil.
