Getting the correct dosage of fish oil is not as straightforward as it seems, and although overdosing is virtually impossible, there is no need to take more than is necessary. It all comes down to quality and freshness.

One of the most important factors is getting enough of the important omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. Recent studies show us that the DHA content is by far the most important in helping with heart and brain health. Most on the market tend to have a much higher amount of the less useful EPA, primarily as it is cheaper to make, so check carefully.

Another factor in the dosage of fish oil is freshness. To be effective, it needs to be as pure as possible, with no additives or flavourings. It should be pharmaceutical grade and have been molecularly distilled to remove all the impurities like mercury and other heavy metals.

Species naturally high in DHA omega 3's are Hoki and Tuna and when fished from sustainable sources and from the cleanest waters, like in the case of the Southern Ocean of New Zealand, you have a winning combination.

A high fish oil dosage is not proven to be harmful, but lower quality products can result in fishy burps, nausea and bloating. This is because the oil is not fresh and many try to disguise this with an enteric coating or flavoring.

An enteric coating is unnecessary as the oil should be released into the stomach for the maximum effectiveness.

For example, the high quality fish oil I use from New Zealand is 1000mg per capsule of which 28% is DHA and 12% is EPA content. Two capsules a day are recommended which is very doable compared to the four or six capsules I see other products stating.

When you know these factors, it makes selecting a product and getting the correct dosage of fish oil much easier, and enables you to start enjoying the many benefits without the worry.
