It is good to eat foods high in omega 3, but the question is are you getting the amounts of omega-3 your body needs form them? Read on to find out why they may not be enough for you.

Omega3 is an essential fatty acid (EFA), meaning that it is a nutrient that your body needs to work optimally; unfortunately your body cannot synthesize it. The implication of this is that you depend solely on your diets and supplements in order to get this essential fatty acid.

Foods high in omega 3 include beef, eggs, walnuts, flaxseed, tofu, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower. You need to know that plants contain ALA (Alpha linolenic acid); the problem is, ALA can not be used by the human body unless it is first converted to DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid). However, studies show that the conversions to dha and epa are both restricted and inefficient.

It is also important to note that DHA and EPA are the major sources of the benefits you derive from omega-3.

Grass fed beef are rich in DHA and EPA but the modern day farming methods have replaced grass with modern animal feeds thereby reducing the quality of omega3 in the beef; same thing goes with egg and chicken.

Other foods high in omega 3 are marine algae and fish caught in the wild; they contain high amounts of epa and dha. The downside is, marine algae are scarce while pollutions in the oceans contaminate fish with pollutants such as mercury, lead, PCBs, pesticides and other heavy metals. These contaminants increase free radicals in your body and lead to health problems; this is why medical practitioners recommend that we take fish oil supplements.

However, not all supplements are pure; therefore always look for those that are molecularly distilled. Molecular distillation ensures that the pollutants are separated from the oil. You should also buy supplements that contain at least double amount of dha than epa because dha is more important.

In order to maximize the benefits, it is recommended that you augment foods high in omega 3 with pure fish oil supplements.
