Omega3 fish oil is fast gaining in popularity and from what seems like only a couple of years ago when all you could buy in mainstream shops was cod liver oil and you had to be in the know to be using a supplement high in omega3. Now, well everyones making it it seems, even many supermarkets have their own brands of the oil but is it any good?Well yes and no depending on what you want it for really. The reason that I say that is because most people taking it are going to want some kind of health benefits from their supplement or in fact even the fish itself if they are looking to increase that aspect of their daily diet ( although eating fish every day could become a wee bit expensive). But there are some crucial factors you have to be aware of.First of all if you are eating more fish to try and increase the amount of  omega3 in your diet then you need to make sure the fish is an oily fish such as salmon or tuna. Couple of things to be mindful of though is that if you want them as a health benefit you are going to need to eat a lot of them – and this could lead to you consuming high levels of mercury which can be dangerous – and secondly just be mindful that tinned tuna has all the oil stripped out of it so you need the fresh fish itself.Really if you want more omega3 fish oil in your diet you are best off supplementing, especially if you are looking for health benefits from it. Now the health benefits are growing on a daily basis as more tests and research are carried out and increasing your levels is being linked to things like improved memory and concentration, assisting type 2 diabetes sufferers and their insulin, helping people control their moods and the list goes on.But the main benefit of taking fish oil is that it fight inflammation. Now inflammation in the body can cause conditions such as join pain and arthritis right the way through to more serious conditions such as heart attacks, high blood pressure and strokes. So all in all very good but what is bad about omega3?Well actually nothing with the essential acid itself but more down to the quality and production of what we put in out mouth. You see manufacturers are a business and as much as supermarkets like to sell us things cheap they want it made cheap. So the fish then becomes a commodity to be bought at the lowest possible price. This can mean that you end out taking a tablet from a fish caught in polluted waters and it has not been purified and can be high in metals such as lead or mercury which can do you more harm than good. Or a fish that after being caught has been frozen and spent several days at sea which means that it has become rancid and when that happens the tablet you swallow can repeat on you and give you fishy burps. Also omega3 on its own is not enough to combat inflammation so if you want a product which you think will help with your arthritis then it needs to be high in DHA – finding a product high in this is easier said than done.
