Acai berries seem to be everywhere, on the television, radio, internet, and Oprah. They claim to help with weight loss, boost metabolism, and strengthen the immune system. What are the actual health benefits of this “miracle” berry? Will it really help or will it only harm the body? What makes this berry one of nature’s most powerful healing foods? Acai berries grow wild in Central and South America. For years the indigenous people have used the acai berry to help prevent diseases and fight aging. Now that the berries are available world-wide, all kinds of things are being said about them. The truth is that acai berries are a close relative of the blueberry, which is one of the top antioxidant rich foods. Acai berries are also high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are important in slowing down the oxidation process in the body, which can damage and destroy cells and tissues in the body. Antioxidants are also important in preventing illnesses like heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants fight against the free radicals which are responsible for the aging process and causing diseases. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and help reduce their destructive powers against cells and tissue. Some antioxidants such as anthocyanins and flavonoids can be found in acai berries. Anthocyanin is a Greek word which translated means “blue plant” and is responsible for keeping the heart healthy. Anthocyanins are what give many fruits their red, purple, and blue colors. Some other fruits that contain anthocyanins are blueberries, red grapes, and cranberries. The fruits and vegetables that are deep purples or blacks have the highest concentration of anthocyanin. Both anthocyanins and flavonoids are powerful antioxidants that help in protecting the cells in the body and defend against outside stress. Acai berries are also rich in protein and fiber, which are both important staples in a healthy diet. The berry also has high levels of omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, which help protect the heart and regulate the cardiovascular system. Omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids contained in the acai berry also help regulate and even lower the levels of cholesterol in the blood. The high potassium content in the acai berry also helps the heart function properly, by boosting circulation and reducing blood pressure. Vitamin E is also contained in acai berries. Vitamin E is used by the body to repair damaged cells, and is used to heal wounds, as well as clot the blood. Despite all these benefits, the main reason that acai berries have become popular recently is because of their reported weight loss benefits. Is this hype, or is their some truth to the claims? If you are expecting to just take acai berries, and change nothing else, then I've got bad news for you- Acai Berries probably wont help. But they DO have some benefits with weight loss though. They can help with weight loss because they help to reduce food cravings, and also help to boost your metabolism. So if you exercise well, eat properly, and take acai berries, you will probably see some benefit, but on their own you are unlikely to notice much difference. There are many benefits to acai berries. Some benefits, like being high in antioxidants, have already been scientifically proven. Other benefits though, like the weight loss claims, and cancer-fighting properties, are still being researched, but with promising results so far. Why not just try some for yourself, and see if you notice an improvement in your health? |
