Over the years cod fish oil also known as cod liver oil has been a supplement taken for good health, and even though it smells and tastes disgusting people have been taking it in the belief of the good that it does for their body, but is taking cod fish oil really a good thing to do?Really it depends on what you are looking to do; you see a lot of people take cod fish oil because they think it is a good source of omega 3 and they think that it will help fight things like arthritis and joint pain etc.. Well this is correct but it is not the best source, let me explain. Good omega3 from fish has to come from an oily fish and a cod is not an oily fish: the omega3 in cod is created in its liver from the algae it eats, and the levels of EPA and DHA which you need to fight inflammation are nowhere near as good as an oily fish.Another thing you have to be wary of is that the cod liver oil is high in vitamins as well, especially A & D which we get from other areas of our diet anyway and if you have too much of these they can become toxic to the body. Plus because it is so heavily fished the waters it comes from can be highly polluted which of course makes the fish polluted. If you take omega 3 from an oily fish though you will see some wonderful benefits for the body; as well as fighting inflammation the DHA found in omega3 has also been linked to being a good defense against certain cancers, beneficial for the digestive system, extremely good for the brain (this is because around a quarter of the brain is made up from DHA fats), and finally it has been linked to helping ward off some allergies. So which oily fish should you use?Again there is conflict here, as if you think oily fish immediately you think salmon, but this is not the best source for an omega3 supplement as quite often it can be highly contaminated with things such as mercury and lead, and not containing much DHA; the best sources for omega 3 are hoki and tuna. Now I am guessing you have heard of tuna but hoki is probably new to you: hoki is found off the coast of New Zealand and the reason that this makes such a good source of fish oil supplement is that the water there is not heavily fished so there is not a lot of pollution; and if the oil from this is combined with the oil from tuna then you have a very potent supplement that is high in DHA which fights inflammation etc... compared to taking cod fish oil. |
