Dna Based Nutrition - a Long Time Coming, and Finally Here

A gene is a section of your DNA that codes for a protein.  A protein is an organic compound.  A person is made from thousands and thousands of different proteins.  Your cells can contain these proteins on their surface (like the Vitamin D Receptor) to recieve chemical messages, or your cells can make proteins to act as messengers within the body (like immune system cytokine TNF-alpha).  Your genes are composed of a part (or allele) from your mother and a part (allele) from your father.  You, as a person, a unique based on the alleles you inherit from your mother and your father.  How these genes are read (and by extension what proteins are made) account for the differences between people.  Most of our genes are identical (around 99%) from person to person.  However, that small percentage that is different accounts for virtually every difference in our observable form (phenotype).  Sometimes, an individual inherits an allele with a base pair of the DNA changed (a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism, or SNP).  When this codes for a protein that is important, it can result in a slight loss of function.
