So briefly speaking, what is turmeric powder? Well, many believe that it hails from India as far back as 2,500 years ago, where it was initially used to dye clothes. By around the year 700 A.D. it reached China and Chinese healers used turmeric to cleanse and detox their patients. My personal knowledge extended to its use as a culinary herb or condiment that I added when I was preparing my favorite Indian dishes. I still use it for that purpose as it spices up the food, makes it taste nice and gives it a nice yellow-brown color. But, sadly this is not going to to be a cookery lesson in how to use turmeric, but in how it's used to impact our health and do it some good. Far from being just a cookery ingredient it now transpires that it can be beneficial to sufferers of a whole host of medical conditions and ailments. Just taking a quick snapshot of that list it includes treatment of liver and digestive disorders, osteoarthritis and even for certain eye diseases. Perhaps the most impressive one I've heard about and to my mind its most important perhaps is in the many instances of hearing about its connection to how it interacts with certain types of cancers, like prostate. But, with this last point in mind, these are still early days and more thorough and exhaustive studies are necessary in order to prove a conclusive link of a benefit from taking turmeric as a dietary supplement. As a consequence, many producers of daily nutritional supplements have begun to incorporate this fine herb into their products. |
