Natural omega 3 is very important to make our body healthier. It is naturally found in the food that people eat. But why do most people resort to buying supplements for this fatty acid? One reason why this fatty acid is lacking in people’s diet is due to the food that people eat. This fatty acid is mostly found in nuts and meats. But the problem is that the meat that people eat does not contain enough fatty acid due to a change in the animals’ diet. In the past, cows and chickens are free to graze on pastureland. But livestock nowadays are raised for profits, which mean that instead of feeding these animals with their natural food, chickens and cows are fed with grains to help fatten them up fast. Though this can be advantageous for farmers as they can sell their livestock fast, but this also resulted to a deficiency in natural omega 3 in chickens and cows. And farmers don’t realize that the natural omega 3 obtained from the meat of these animals are what consumer’s need to be healthy. And the real source of this fatty acid is through the natural food that these animals eat, which is grass. Thus, nutritionists are now recommending consumers to buy grass fed livestock. Though this can be a bit expensive but the benefit that people can obtain from these livestock are worth the price. Another natural omega 3 source is fish. In fact fish is the best source of this fatty acid. This is true in the past. But nowadays, with the amount of water pollution in the sea, rivers and oceans, fish are now contaminated with toxins like mercury, lead and PCB. This is a reason why people are also advised to limit their fish intake to prevent these toxins to build up in the body. And farm raised fish, on the other hand, though a lot less contaminated, are also not healthy. Why? This is because farm raised fish like salmon are not fed with their natural diet, which are algae that are the true source of natural omega 3 in fish. They are fed with food pellets, which are full of chemicals that can be harmful to the body. There are even occurrences wherein fish farmers use dyes to inject to the flesh of the fish to give it a pink colored flesh to their salmon. Plant based sources of this fatty acid is also not very beneficial because the fatty acid that is found in plants are ALA. Fatty acid in this form needs to be converted into DHA and EPA before the body can use it. And this can be a problem, especially with older people, as they may not be able to covert ALA to DHA and EPA when they need it. And conversion to DHA and EPA may not be very efficient. Thus, people nowadays are resorting to fish oil supplements as omega 3 sources and less on natural omega 3 sources. |
