In recent years one of the most exciting discoveries in the field health science has been the understanding of how free radicals are produced in the body, the effects they can cause to our health and methods for combating them and possibly even reversing the damage that they may have already be caused.Free radicals are atoms in the body that have at least one unpaired electron. These can easily attach to other atoms which results in a chemical reaction. Too many of these reactions can cause damage. These free radicals are caused by a number of things such as environmental stress, tobacco smoking, high fat diets or even exposure to the sun (radiation). These free radicals are neutralized in the body by antioxidants which are a group of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that counteract the production of free radicals.Diseases such as cancer, stoke and heart disease and even cataracts seem to be very different. The one thing they have in common is they can all be caused by the effects of free radical damage. Some scientists believe that the aging process itself is somehow related to free radical production. Some of the more important vitamins that counteract the effect of free radicals are vitamin C because it protects other vitamins such as vitamin E which is very helpful in protecting the cells of the brain and spinal cord. Grape seed extract contains more than 20 times the antioxidant properties of vitamin C and 50 times more than vitamin E.In conclusion, it is important that we consume antioxidants both in our diets and through nutritional supplementation to assure our health and prevent some very harmful diseases. |
