Coenzyme Q10 is a compound that is found in every cell in the body. Its key role is the production of energy in the mitochondria which is the part of the cell that is responsible for producing energy in the form of ATP. This compound is produced naturally by every cell in the body. The levels of this compound has been shown to decrease with age (starting at around 30 years) as well as in people with chronic diseases such as heart conditions, muscular dystrophy and HIV among others. Some researchers believe that people that are taking statin drugs are venerable to CoQ10 deficiencies. Symptoms of deficiency include muscle fatigue, kidney failure, cardiomyopathy, and retarded growth. A deficiency, if not corrected, has profound implications for our health. Larger organs such as the heart are particularly vulnerable due the large amount of energy they need to function. People with heart failure have been shown to have lower levels of CoQ10 in their heart cells than people with normal heart function. SupplementationĀ with CoQ10 has been shown in studies to reduce some symptoms of heart failure such as shortness of breath and swelling. It is thought that it increases energy production in the heart and increases the pumping action. This is true with people that have high blood pressure (hypertension) when the heart has to work harder to keep the blood flowing. This can take a toll over time and causes the chambers of the heart to become larger and weaker. We are all aware of the negative effect that high cholesterol can have on heart health. We have seen years of television ads promoting drugs that reduce cholesterol and make us healthier. The primary focus of any cholesterol management therapy is to reduce the levels of LDL or "bad cholesterol". High levels of LDL are thought to be a contributing factor of heart disease. People that have low levels of HDL "good cholesterol also show increased heart disease. LDL has long been thought to be the cause of artery clogging plaque which in turn prevents proper blood flow and leads to increased likelihood of heart problems. In recent years there is more evidence that instead of LDL being the cause of plaque it is present for a different reason. This reason being the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. The belief being that it is this oxidation of LDL that is the cause of plaque buildup. Antioxidants, such as CoQ10, protect our bodies against free radicals which are produced when LDL is oxidized. As LDL travels through our system it is accompanied by CoQ10 to reduce the negative effects of oxidation and plaque build up. In conclusion, our ability to achieve a healthier heart is in a balanced lifestyle plan. We all know that to maintain our good health we need to exercise on a regular basis and be conscious that we are consuming a nutritious and well balanced diet. Part of this plan should include supplementation, especially as we age and our bodies' ability to produce the compounds that are essential to our good overall health diminishes. As well as people with diseases that have been shown to reduce or ability to produce these CoQ10. |
