People most often falsely assume that sleeplessness is the only symptom to the sleeping disorder known as Insomnia. There are numerous other symptoms to the disease, some of which are difficulty in sleeping during the night but unable to keep awake in the afternoon, exhausted appearance, occurrence of frequent mood swings, excessive emotional sensitivity and irksome surroundings. There is also the occurrence of sleep fragmentation which is the lack of continuous sleep. The person may easily fall asleep when he goes to bed but wakes up several times in between all through the night. Sleep maintenance or shift work are also included among the various symptoms of sleep disorders. This happens when a person is unable to go back to sleep after waking up at very early hours which is part of the advanced phase of sleep disorder. There is a also a possibility of the person not capable of staying awake which means sleeping at inappropriate hours and not keeping to the normal timings of sleep. This could be indicative of narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disease, central sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome. When a person says he cannot wake up early in the morning or takes about an hour to completely wake up are victims of excessive sleep inertia. These people have difficulty in the transition of sleep to wakefulness. Sleep inertia and apnea are apparent causes of such genre of sleep disorders. A person who claims that they do bizarre things in their sleep may be in for surprises. They end up doing weird things such as sleep walking, REM or rapid eye movement which happens when the person is having nightmares, confusional arousals, eating disorders and change in behavior and bruxism are types of sleeping diseases called parasomnias. If the persons answer is lack of sleep due to the partner probably snoring, similar causes such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, or periodic limb disorder are to b held responsible.
