Everyone has a night now and then when they have trouble sleeping. Sometimes it is because of stress, and other times it is because of other emotional or physical factors. However, there are some people who get full nights of sleep (or so they think) but still have a sleeping problem that they might be unaware of.These people are often suffering from a sleep disorder known as sleep apnea (where the person stops breathing at times) and thus might need to be evaluated at a sleep center. A sleep center is a place that is usually a part of a larger hospital. Each person that participates in a sleep study is usually evaluated for a period of twelve hours. At the sleep center, each patient is given a private bedroom and bathroom. The amenities will vary depending on the place, but most rooms also have a television. The patient is encouraged to bring additional pillows and blankets for comfort if it will make them feel more comfortable. The goal of the study is for the patient to emulate his or her schedule prior to going to bed as accurately as possible. The patient is also encouraged to wear his or her own pajamas while at the sleep center, provided that they are loose enough to comfortably accommodate the electrodes that will be used to monitor the brain activity and breathing patterns of the patient. Once the study has been completed, the patient will usually return to their regular routine.
