Since milk and other milk products make up one of the major food groups in the Food Pyramid, it is no surprise that our bodies demand those nutrients. However, many of us donât consume as high of an amount of dairy as we did when we were younger. When we were younger, most of us were accustomed to having milk with our cereal in the morning, a glass of milk with dinner and a glass of milk at night to help us sleep better. Now days, many adults skip breakfast all together and the beverage which sits next to our dinner plate is usually soda or juice. Therefore, it is no surprise that many of us donât get the right amount of calcium in our bodies. Some of us avoid milk because we are afraid of all the hormonal and antibiotic additives that are present in most milk. However, there are several alternatives. If you want all the goodness of milk without any additives, try buying hormone free, organic milk. Then what are some of the ways we can add more dairy into our diets? First of all, try to include fat-free or low fat milk as a beverage with your meal. You can also have fat-free or low fat yogurt as a snack. Some other, more fun, alternatives include making a fruit and yogurt smoothie, making a yogurt dip for fruit, making chocolate pudding from low fat milk, cutting up fresh fruit into vanilla yogurt, and topping vegetables with shredded low fat cheese. You can also create your own cappuccinos or lattes with fat free skim milk. With so many different choices when it comes down to milk products, everyone should be able to find at least one source of dairy which they enjoy eating. |
