What is a Diet Plateau? Your cruising along losing weight on your new diet program, first day 3 pounds, second day 2 pounds, the third day 1½ pounds, and then the 4th day nothing. And that nothing continues on and on, maybe you lose a ½ pound only to see it come back the next day. You are stuck. What's going on, you are eating the same food, doing the same exercises, and drinking the same water as you were when the weight was joyously falling off your body? You have hit the dreaded diet plateau! The conventional wisdom says that if you wait it out long enough, you will eventually break the diet plateau and begin to lose weight again, but you should expect several of these diet plateaus along your journey toward your goal. The Problem These diet plateaus are often so discouraging, that like a sailor in the Sargasso sea, you give up and abandon the diet. I know because I have been there many times. When I am dieting I look to the scales for my reward rather than the plate. When my diet plateaus, I get no reward from either plate or scales and I get discouraged and give up. Why Diets Plateau? or We Are Not Ogg! Our bodies are programed for survival which was good when humans were tromping around after wild game with clubs and rocks. If the wild boar where scares that year and Ogg couldn't get enough food, his body relied on its stored fat; when the wild boar were plentiful, Ogg ate more than enough and his body stored the extra food as fat for use in the future. We are not Ogg! We usually have plenty of food around but our bodies still act like Ogg's and when we eat more than we need to, it is stored as fat. When we try to lose that fat our bodies, like Ogg's, goes into starvation protection mode by slowing down the metabolism and holding on to the weight—sigh. There is Hope for Breaking Diet Plateaus. The trick is to keep your body guessing, so avoid diets where you must eat the same thing over and over again. If you eat different things on different days you can achieve amazing results.
