Maybe you are one of the many people who are not using a drinking water filter, if so, you could well be doing yourself some harm. Read on to find out why. Just take a look at the drinks and beverages section in any grocery store or supermarket. What is the most popular item on those shelves? Bottled water! Why is that? Well first of all, the store is not going to stock something unless a lot of people want to buy it, and bottled water sells by the million. Secondly, the people are buying because it tastes good and their own tap water probably tastes horrible.

And they'll buy it even though it's a drag to carry it all the way home!

But there is another reason for thinking about drinking purer water. Your health and that of your family!

If you don't know what is in your drinking water, you could be in for a surprise. Many domestic water supplies contain elements of such heavy metals as uranium, radium, chromium or lead. These can find there way into the supply by quite natural ways. Also, the water companies themselves often deliberately add chlorine and fluorides to the water.

Chlorine is added because it kills harmful bacteria, but there is evidence that it is not always beneficial to people who drink the water that contains it.

On top of all this, many city water supplies are not able to use fresh water in their supplies, but rely instead on reclaimed or recycled water, which they subject to a cleaning process. The trouble is that these processes, good as they are, do not always remove all contaminants. One of the reasons is that some people irresponsibly tip stuff like paint, solvents, or engine oil into their domestic drainage system, which then finds its way into the drinking water supply. And there are frequent occurrences nowadays of industrial plants accidentally allowing large quantities of chemicals or industrial waste to leak in to the water supply.

As if that wasn't enough, when you consider that the reclaimed water comes from the sewage plant, well it doesn't paint a pretty picture, does it? These reasons are why a lot of people now choose to filter their water.

This has probably put you off eating your breakfast, but the good news is that most home water filter systems, even the cheaper ones, will take out almost all of these contaminants. It is worth shopping around to find the best system for your home. The most expensive systems are not always the best. In addition, the cheapest systems don't always end up being the cheapest in the long run. But if you take a little bit of time to read some reviews of different makes and systems, you will be better able to find the one that is right for you.
