Many consumers believe their domestic water supply is safe, and yet they buy a water filter for their home. This article explains why.

I know some people who live in a "hard water" area. This means of course that the surrounding land has a high concentration of chalk, so that when the underground rivers flow through it, they pick up a lot of chalk as they go. This chalk then finds its way into the domestic water supply. It can cause all kinds of problems, mostly to do with clogging of pipes and boilers, kettles and other appliances. The kettle gets a build up of hard scale on the heating element, which lowers its effectiveness at boiling the water, so costing you more money. And the same applies to other units in the house.

When it comes to the taste of this hard water, the only way I can describe it is to say it tastes "furry." Maybe that isn't a good description, but its the best I can do. Certainly one is not inclined to drink large amounts of it, as it just isn't very appetising. If we also note that the water company in that area puts in so much chlorine that the water comes out of the faucet smelling and tasting just like a municipal swimming pool, then I think you get the idea of why you don't drink much tap water in that area!

To solve this problem of lousy tasting drinking water, my friends have got themselves a water filter. There has been a lot of discussion of this subject in the last few years, mostly on the health risks posed by drinking tap water. My friends, however, are not too worried about the contamination of the water. They say that they trust the water is clean and disease free in their area, but, because of the chalk and the chlorine, its unpleasant to drink it.

The point we are making here is that not everybody who buys a water filter is doing so because of worries about health risks. And it is important not to over-emphasize the extent of the problems with the water supply. There are many different benefits of water filters. My friends are using a filter simply because they like the taste of filtered water.

They are well informed people who are aware of the amounts of water that are now being quoted by health experts as the recommended daily intake (RDI) for an average person. They realized that these amounts would not be pleasant to drink straight from the tap. They calculated how much it would cost to buy that much water in bottles from a store. That was just too much to pay. So finally they chose what they believe is the best water filter on the market, and for a fraction of the cost of bottled water, they now can drink their RDI of clean, clear, pleasant-tasting water. Free of chalk, free of chlorine.

There are several types of water filters, at very varied prices, and there are many different reasons why you would want to buy one. We suggest that you read some reviews of the various makes and models before making a decision to buy.
