So why don’t you find the answer by yourself? You can do some test that can answer your question about having a weight loss program or not. There are some parameters that you can measure or calculate easily. They are percent body fat, waist-to-hip ratio and body mass index. The first one is percent body fat. This method is conducted by using a skinfold caliper that will grab a fold of skin and pull it away from your muscle. It is done at several place of your body such as waist, hips, and thighs. It is not painful as it sounds a little creepy. Then they will check the skin and will combine the result and report to you as your body fat estimation. The second one is waist-to-hip ratio. You can do this test at home by yourself. What you need is just a tape measure. What you have to do is measure your waist circumference in its narrowest point. Then you measure your hips circumference in its widest point. After that, you calculate your waist-to-hip ratio by dividing your waist circumference by your hip circumference. If you have got the number, what does it means? Waist-to hip ratio also can be used to check your risk of getting heart disease and hypertension. If you fat is accumulated more in your belly, you have higher risk for heart disease and hypertension than those who has more fat within their hips and thighs. For women, the ratio is higher than 0.85 while for men is 0.90. As the ratio increases, so does the risk The last parameter is your body mass index. Maybe you have heard about it and you can calculate it. But I’ll tell you again to make sure you get the right formula and the right interpretation. Your BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in pounds or kilograms by our height in inches or meters squared. If you are working with kilograms and meters, the number you got is your BMI. If you are working with pounds and inches, the number you got, still have to multiply with 705. This is the example. For example, a man who is 200 pounds weight and 5 feet and 9 inches height. Let’s calculate his BMI Height of 5'9" = 69 inches 69 squared = 4,761 200 divided by 4,761 = 0.0420 0.0420 x 705 = 29.61 (which would be rounded up to a BMI of 30) If we convert his weight and height to kilograms and meters, and using second formula we will get the same result. Height of 5'9" = 69 inches = 1.7526 meters 1.7526 squared = 3.0716 200 pounds = 90.72 kilograms 90.72 divided by 3.0716 = 29.54 (which would be rounded up to a BMI of 30) If your BMI is in range 18.5 to 24.9 then congratulations. You have the normal body weight. But if you have in range 25 to 29.9 than you have got overweight. Greater than 30 for obese and greater for 40 is morbidly obese. If your BMI is around 25 to 34.5, you may start concerned your health because your risk of getting heart disease, hypertension and diabetes will increase, especially for those who have waist size more than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women.
