What reasons do you have for losing weight? Are they health reasons? Selfish reasons? For vanities sake? Do you want to look better or lower your cholesterol? Do you want to help treat your diabetes or catch the attention of some hot guy or girl? Are your reasons for losing weight logical or emotional or both? What will help you lose weight quicker and more consistently - logical reasons or the emotional reasons to lose weight? In the end it really depends on the type of person you are and where you draw your motivation from. Personally I think it is more practical to consider both the logical reasons and the emotional reasons to lose weight. They often go hand in hand. Your desire to lose weight may begin with your doctor telling you that you are overweight and if you don't lose weight you will not be healthy. This is a logical reason. It's also rooted in delayed gratification meaning you are going to lose weight and get "healthier" by doing so, but you may not see the health benefits for several months or years (delayed gratification). Is this logical thinking enough to motivate you to lose weight? Contrary to that logical reasoning the emotional reason to lose weight would look like this. Your doctor tells you to lose weight because it would be good for you (logical) or you know you should lose weight because you have a family history of heart disease and you don't want to die (emotional). Do you want to lose your beer belly because excess abdominal fat increases your risk of illness (logical) or because you want to impress the cute new girl at the office (emotional)? Although your desire to lose weight and to transform your body begins with a logical reason there are often emotional reasons to lose weight that will be more motivating for an individual to stick to it and accomplish their weight loss goals. In the end it doesn't really matter which type of reasoning motivates you more. The key is to find the reason or reasons that define why you want to lose weight - those reasons that strike at your core. Once those are identified you are more likely to stick to your plan and transform your body into a healthier new you! |
