A Massachusetts market analysis firm, called BCC Research, claims that by the year 2009, Americans will be spending more than 70 billion dollars each year on anti-aging products and services.  This does not come as a shock to many of us, because let’s face it, we all want look younger and feel healthier as we age. Clearly, we all know that we can’t stop the aging process; however, we can surely slow it down with the right diet, supplements and lifestyle. In this article I will discuss healthy nutrition as a part of longevity.

It is no surprise that the road to longevity is influenced by the diet we consume. This does not mean that we need to buy the best diet pills; it means that we have to learn to eat healthy. For instance, when our bodies break down fat, protein and carbohydrates and turn them into energy, they create waste products. These waste products lead to the development of free radicals which are responsible for damaging our DNA and causing physical degeneration and the onset of degenerative diseases (such as cancer and heart disease). That is why it is important to eliminate any unhealthy fats from our diets.

As a means of fighting off the free radicals, it is recommended that the average adult consume five to seven servings of deep-colored fresh fruit and vegetables each and every day. Deep-hued fruit and vegetables are rich in radical fighting antioxidants. Aside from fruit and vegetables, certain other healthy food choices include: whole grains, lean meats, and fat-free dairy products. This is not only true for people who want to lose weight. So if you wish to increase your lifespan you should make sure that you are consuming a healthy diet. Stay away from fast food, fried food, sodium, cholesterol and any type of unhealthy fat.
