Before your activities you should warm up at least five minutes preferably twenty. A good warm up consists of stretching and light motions. When you are stretching hold the stretches for a minimum of twenty seconds. Do not bounce while stretching. Bouncing motions can overextend the joints causing injury. After initial stretches do some light jogging for three to five minutes, and then stretch again. You will find that your range of motion may have increased since the first round of stretching. Gradually condition your muscles for your activity. The amount of time you spend doing exercise activities should be increased over several weeks. Pick shoes that match your foot type, and wear shoes that are suited for the activity you are participating in. When running try to avoid stepping on uneven surfaces. Be careful running downhill. While running downhill you may pick up too much speed causing you to fall.
