I would like to start off by spending a brief moment on the differences between dementia and Alzheimer’s. A lot of people tend to mix up the two and it is worth noting that there are big differences. Alzheimer’s is officially classified as a disease whilst dementia can be a warning sign of a number of different diseases.

Even though many people when they get older will experience a bit of memory loss, it is not considered normal that any memory issues will lead to real difficulties in every day life.

There are different symptoms which are often associated with Alzheimer’s and which caretakers, friends and family can use to spot this disease in a friend or loved one.

Strange Behavior

What can often be seen with people who are suffering from this disease is that they will misplace common items in the strangest of places. They could for example place their house keys in the microwave or store their bread in the dishwasher.

Communication

What is often very difficult for loved ones to witness is the fact that many Alzheimer patients will often have great difficulties in using even the most basic of words in conversations. They can often not remember these words and will think for long periods of time about a certain word.

Short Term Memory Loss

Many people with the first on stage of the disease will first start having problems with their short term memory and not with their long term memory. A patient could forget about a recent conversation, family visit or an event whilst they can remember everything that occurred a few years back.

Mood Swings

Mood swings are another symptom of this particular disease and this is often very difficult to deal with for family members. One moment they might be laughing and being friendly whilst a minute later they could become paranoid or extremely upset.

Hygiene Issues

Many people suffering from Alzheimer’s will also start having hygiene issues. They will stop bathing, shaving or washing their clothes for example.
