Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles at key points throughout the body. It is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that is now being embraced more in the UK. Every year there are around three million people undergoing this treatment.

What's it all about?

The Chinese belief in a force called Qi that controls the human body. Qi (pronounced as chee) is believed to flow throughout body channels known as meridians. It is the unbalance of Qi that makes our body ill. Acupuncture aims to redress the balance of Qi and aids the smooth transition through our body. Some people disbelieve the theory of Qi and concentrate more upon the way acupuncture helps the body release its endorphins, natural painkillers. Science cannot answer everything about acupuncture as it also aids nerve and muscle tissue stimulation.

Acupuncture is a controversial subject and although research has not revealed all the claims made there are some successes that cannot be disputed many lay around symptoms that require variations in pain relief, migraine, headache, dental pain, neck pain, chronic (long-lasting) back pain, post-operative pain, and nausea (particularly chemotherapy-induced nausea). While more research is necessary the treatment is very safe, non-invasive with few side effects or complications.

There are over 500 acupuncture points on the body, in practice only 10-12 acupuncture points are used in a session. It is not painful inserting the needles as you should feel just a slight tingling sensation. The needles are thin and solid, not like the hollow injection type.

Almost anyone can use acupuncture, but it would be wise to inform an acupuncturist of any disorders or treatments you have had or are undergoing. If you are pregnant there are some places where the needles cannot be placed, but it can be used to help during some pain and sickness stages of pregnancy.

If you do have any acupuncture treatment then you should consider taking similar precautions as you would follow a procedure from a traditional hospital or dentist. Trying not to drive or operate heavy machine, although many have no side affects we are all individuals so be cautious.

Many people use acupuncture as a last restart when all else fails, but it is certainly increasing in popularity.

Be sure to investigate any acupuncturist to ensure that they are qualified and capable of delivering the treatment you are seeking.
